FAQ – Common Questions About Industrial Gas Compressors
Expert answers to frequent technical inquiries, helping you optimize performance and reliability.
Excessive oil consumption is usually caused by:
- Oil too thin – due to high operating temperature or incorrect viscosity grade
- Oil pressure too high
- Excessive piston-to-cylinder clearance
- Cylinder out of round or worn
- Oil leakage from cylinder – worn piston rings, rings stuck in grooves, or wrong ring type installed
- Excessive crankshaft or connecting rod bearing clearance
- Crankcase overheating or poor ventilation
- Splash lubrication rod too long or oil level too high
Abnormal exhaust temperature means it exceeds the design value. The main factors include:
- High intake air temperature – caused by low intercooler efficiency or scale buildup
- High pressure ratio – due to valve leakage or piston ring leakage
- Insufficient cooling water (for water‑cooled models) or low water flow
- Theoretical causes: intake air temperature, pressure ratio, and compression index (for air, K=1.4).
If the compressor cannot deliver enough gas volume at rated pressure, the discharge pressure will drop. Possible causes:
- Compressor too small for the required flow – replace with a larger unit
- Inlet valve leakage
- Piston ring wear causing internal leakage
- Pressure between stages abnormal – usually due to valve or piston ring leakage
Overheating at moving parts accelerates wear and can cause major failure. Common reasons:
For bearings:
- Poor fit between bearing and shaft (small contact area)
- Bearing misalignment or bent crankshaft
- Low oil viscosity, blocked oil passage, or oil pump failure
- Improper installation – unlevel base, misaligned main shaft and motor shaft
For crosshead/slide plate or packing/piston rod:
- Insufficient lubrication or excessive friction
Operators can often identify the source of abnormal noise:
Knocking inside cylinder:
- Piston-to-cylinder head clearance too small
- Piston rod nut loose or disconnected
- Piston end threaded plug damaged
- Metal fragments or water in cylinder
Knocking in crankcase:
- Loose or broken bolts on crankshaft, connecting rod, or crosshead
- Worn shaft diameter with excessive clearance
- Excessive clearance between crosshead pin and bushing
Knocking in valve chamber:
- Broken exhaust valve plate
- Soft or damaged valve spring
- Incorrect load regulator setting
